“15 miles of former railway line turned trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders”
15 miles of flat, traffic-free former railway line running from Braintree to Bishop’s Stortford (closed to passengers in 1952, to freight in 1972), popular for walking, cycling and horse riding on well-surfaced, mostly straight paths. The route passes former Victorian station buildings, Hatfield Forest, Great Notley Country Park and several historic villages. The Booking Hall Café at the old Rayne Station (Station Road, Rayne, CM77 6RX) is the trail’s main on-site catering, open 9:30am-4pm daily and 10am-4pm on bank holidays. Several car parks sit along the route (see the official Flitch Way map); charges apply via MiPermit at some. Dogs and picnics allowed, BBQs not allowed. The volunteer group Friends of the Flitch Way helps maintain the route and publishes its own suggested walking and cycling routes.
