“300 acres of riverside walks and birdwatching alongside the River Crouch”

A 300+ acre SSSI, RAMSAR and Special Protection Area site bordered on three sides by the River Crouch, Clements Green Creek and Fenn Creek — grazing marsh with roughly 10 miles of rights of way (mostly grass or bare earth, with a 1km surfaced stretch east from the riverside car park) plus a Community Orchard with spring blossom. One of the best year-round birdwatching spots in the area: overwintering brent geese, waders and ducks, breeding sedge warblers, cuckoos and skylarks, alongside water voles, adders, grass snakes and damselflies. Cycling is allowed (pedestrians have right of way), and fishing is permitted from the sea wall in the river and creeks. Dogs allowed under control, picnics allowed, BBQs and swimming not allowed. No toilets on site. Maintained partly by the South Woodham Volunteers group. Hosts a free weekly parkrun and occasional “Great Greyhound Walks”. Parking is free; open 8am to dusk daily, including Christmas Day.
